Tonic Rosé 2017
It feels like an age since we had that tiny quantity of 2016 Rosé to play with. And so not a minute too soon comes its younger sibling, from the up-and-down 2017 vintage. Straight off the bat this feels less serious than the 2016, but a whole lot more fun. Where the 2016 directed your dinner party conversation towards the great Latin American Nobel Literature Laureates, the 2017 hit your doorstep with a bottle of mescal, a battered old edition of Cranium and half a packet of cheezels. It's there for a good time...delicious, definitely smashable.
The varieties haven't changed but the blend proportions have: 30% Grenache from the beautiful Churinga vineyard in Watervale has been blended with 70% Mataro from Norm's Block in Armagh, Clare. The grapes were foot-stomped and immediately basket pressed, giving the juice sufficient time in contact with the red grape skins for it to pick up that that burnished salmon colour - slightly darker than last year.
The juice went into old French barriques, where it fermented wild and in its own time. Benign neglect then took over until it was racked off lees and bottled with a small amount SO2, but without fining or filtration, in October 2017. It is dry with heaps of texture and flavour. This year the peaches and cream arrive in an avalanche, rather than a whisper. The acid is also a touch softer than the uber-crunchy 2016. Chill down two bottles at a time just in case.
We found a new bottle this year to show off the wine's colour better, and we loved the look of the clear bottle with the branded cork so we've giving it a crack without the wax this time.

Review by Mike Bennie at http://www.winefront.com.au (Nov 2017)
"Clare Valley rose from the Tonic Wines lads, clean and clear as a Spring day. Released in time for the dawning of Summer, but with that in mind the wine could segue to Autumn, handily, such is its light savouriness and added textural interest. Ring the bell, it’s drinking time.
Deceptively light but imbued with fine, cranberry and minerally flavours. It’s chalky in texture, brisk in acidity, clear and crisp and clean. Scents are muted, but you get whiffs of pomegranate, almond and watermelon. Bone dry finish and mouthwatering to close. This is just so spot on." 92/100 Points
