Tonic Rosé 2018 - SOLD OUT

Rosé is having its time in the sun, both figuratively and literally. We still only make a tiny amount but it's so fun to play with, and certainly a heap of fun to drink. You may remember last year that we basically called the 2017 Rose an irresponsible partyhound, there for a good time not a long time. We might have been a touch harsh; that wine firmed up and got more serious with time in bottle, developing endless interesting savoury nuances. What will happen with 2018....let's have a look'see.

The varieties haven't changed but once again the blend proportions have: 40% Grenache from the beautiful Churinga vineyard in Watervale has been blended with 60% Mataro from Norm's Block in Armagh, Clare. The grapes were crushed and immediately basket pressed, giving the juice sufficient time in contact with the red grape skins for it to pick up that that burnished salmon colour.

The juice went into old French barriques, where it fermented wild and in its own time. Benign neglect then took over until it was racked off lees and bottled with a small amount SO2, but without fining or filtration, in January 2019. This edition spent a few months longer in barrel than previous years. It is bone dry yet supple and just so damn drinkable. A little more fruit driven but with a trademark savoury element and textural interest. Flavours of pomegranate and dried cherry and refreshing acidity, with heaps of texture and flavour.

What others have said about the previous vintage - Tonic Rosé 2017...

Review by Mike Bennie at (Nov 2017)

"Clare Valley rose from the Tonic Wines lads, clean and clear as a Spring day. Released in time for the dawning of Summer, but with that in mind the wine could segue to Autumn, handily, such is its light savouriness and added textural interest. Ring the bell, it’s drinking time.

Deceptively light but imbued with fine, cranberry and minerally flavours. It’s chalky in texture, brisk in acidity, clear and crisp and clean. Scents are muted, but you get whiffs of pomegranate, almond and watermelon. Bone dry finish and mouthwatering to close. This is just so spot on." 92/100 Points
